Richard Dyer's Star Theory

This is a theory that talks about how stars are now being turned into constructions, and not real people. This design will then be advertised through magazines, music videos and advertisement. Richard Dyer feels that artists brand identity is to act as a 'real person' for business purposes as the audience will be able to relate to them.

An example of a musician who relates to Richard Dyer's star theory is Miley Cyrus. She is a performer who has been built to be someone who twerks whilst wearing little clothing. However, this is not something she would do in the privacy of her own. Meaning she is being built as someone else.

Another way in which artists can relate to this theory is through objects or props that they are usually seen with. An example of this could be with Kanye West and his shutter shade. These shades were turned into a common feature for him. Fans of his then started to go out and purchase glasses like his, leading to a change in the fashion market.
