What is Indie Folk?
Indie folk is a genre of music that originated in the 1990's. It arose when some indie singer/songwriters started writing music that was influenced with contemporary folk as well as country and rock music. It is a genre that hybridises acoustic guitar melodies and traditional folk music. Indie folk bands tend to be quite large and their songs usually include complicated instrumentation and multi voice harmonies. Some of the biggest influences in the Indie Folk genre have been Bob Dylan, Nash & Young and Radio head.
The History of Indie Folk
The Indie Folk genre was a sub genre who's roots can be traced back to the 1990's. Artists like Ani Di Franco and Dan Bern were both folk singers who were equally influenced by both rock and folk music. Nowadays, Indie Folk artists are usually seen in bands that originate from the west coast where indie folk artists in the 90's were far more independent with their music.
Who are some of the most well known artists in the genre?
The most recognisable Indie folk bands around today are probably either the Decemberists or The Lumineers. The Decemberists started off on a smaller indie folk record label but have now moved onto to a deal with Capitol Records.
What instruments are usually featured?
Unlike other artists in other genres. Indie Folk bands tend to not have a usual set up, they usually just use what instrument suits the song. However, most of the Indie Folk bands you see today are usually built around a front man who plays a guitar.
