Prop Analysis

For this task i have picked out some props used in music videos. Props are important to a music video as they could give a secret message or affect to the consumer. This is why we should understand how they are used so me and my group can use them effectively.

The first video i have chosen to analyse is the song 'Hopeless Wanderer' by Mumford & Sons. In this video, the props that we can see are the many different instruments being played by the actors in the video. From my own knowledge i can tell that there is a guitar, a Banjo, a Cello and a Piano.  As we already know, apart from the lead vocalist who usually plays a guitar, Indie Folk bands do not usually follow a specific routine for what instruments they use, more often than not its just whatever suits the song. This theory relates to this music video as we can see that the lead vocalist is carrying the guitar, where the other instruments are playing a random selection of instruments. I feel that they have used these props/instruments to show the audience the lack of caution in the selection of what instruments are used in the Indie Folk genre.

Another good use of props in a music video is in The 1975's song 'Robbers'. In this song we see the use of a gun and a balaclava. The balaclava tells the audience that the character in this music video has or is going to have a reason to hide his face. This will leave the audience guessing until they see the use of the next prop, the gun. This will then tell the audience that this character is going to partake in some sort of hold up or heist. Another detail that i noticed with one of the props was the fact that the gun was the colour black. As we already know, black is a colour that strongly represents death, so this could be hinting to the audience that something is going to occur in the video.
